Now that the main question has been dealt with, does anyone know if there is a pattern to location of the serial number? It doesn't seem to be chronologically determined, at least. On some of my Canon lenses, both recent origin and early lenses still in the list, the number is on the metal (or plastic) base plate, as in the case here. On some others, similarly both recent origin and early lenses still in the list, it is stamped into the lens barrel on the bottom near the mount, with or without paint.

Cheers Jason If you are trying to claim a rebate and they ask for a cut-out piece from the box, you need to cut out the whole barcodes area, not only the serial number. There are other numbers there that they need. The best thing is to look at instructions that should have come in the rebate form, and you should see a picture of the area they want.

Hope this helps, Armando. For anyone claiming online you need to find the serial number. It is on the lens, but its really hard to see - very small numbers stamped into the lens above the larger stamped sequence that starts with CE.

To see it do this: • Put the lens on the camera. • Turn the camera and lens upside down. • Point the lens away from yourself.

• See the large stamped area of characters and icon beginning 'CE' and ending in 'EAC' on the part of the lens nearest the camera body and to the right of the 'MACRO 0.22/0.7ft' white letters. • Look just above it (on the same ring of plastic) while trying to catch that area in a brighter light - i.e.
